Aluminium, the well-known chemical element with the symbol Al, is a silvery-white metal that has been the subject of controversy in recent years, particularly in the context of antiperspirants. Studies have suggested a possible link between the use of aluminium-containing products and the risk of breast cancer. Antiperspirants work by blocking the sweat glands, creating a gel that clogs the outlets of these glands. However, simply washing off the area where the product was applied can remove this effect. Cosmetics often contain aluminium salts or aluminium-zirconium complexes, such as aluminium chloride, aluminium hydrochloride or aluminium sesquichlorohydrate. The toxicological profile of these substances is well researched and many institutions continuously monitor their effects. W 2019 Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety issued an opinion in which the harmful effects of antiperspirants containing aluminium on health, including the risk of breast cancer or Alzheimer's disease, were not confirmed. Myths about the negative effects of aluminium in cosmetics are mainly due to the misinterpretation of scientific studies that found increased concentrations of this element in nerve tissue in people with Alzheimer's disease. However, the penetration of aluminium through the skin has not been proven, and the main source of aluminium supply to the human body is the diet and the water consumed. Higher concentrations of aluminium in nerve tissue may be a result of the disease itself, rather than a cause of the disease.
